ITEM TITLE: Resolution A M/ Requesting the Metropolitan Transit Development
Board to Designate former San Diego & Atizona Eastern Railroad Right
of Way as an Alternat' ve Route for the South Bay Bike Route
SUBMITTED BY: City Attorne (4/5ths Vote: Yes No x )
The resolution would request the Metropolitan Transit Development
Board to work with CALTRANS to relocate the South Bay Bike Route
to the former San Diego & Arizona Eastern Railroad right of way.
RECOMMENDATION:: Adopt the resolution
BOARD/COMMISION RECOMMENDATION: N/A
DISCUSSION:
The present South Bay Bike Route alignment passes through Imperial
Beach and South San Diego on a major six-lane highway (Palm
Avenue/State Route 75) . This route is dangerous in that it mixes
bicylists and automobile traffic. It discourages bicyclists from
using the South Bay Bike Route for work and recreation.
The South Bay Bike Route is a tremendous regional resource with
even greater potential if it can be made safer, more direct and
more scenic. The proposed resolution asks MTDB to work with
CALTRANS and other affected public agencies to place the South Bay
Bike Route on the former San Diego & Arizona Eastern Railroad
right of way starting at Main Street in Chula Vista and proceeding
west until the bike route connects with the bike route at Seventh
Avenue in Imperial Beach. Implementation of this proposal would
place the bike •route on an exclusive right of way thereby
providing a more scenic, safe and functional route.
