RECOMMENDATION: That Council accept the bids and award the contract to Nelson & Sloan. BOARDS/COMMISSIONS RECOMMENDATION: Not applicable. DISCUSSION: Seven vendors were mailed bid proposal forms with three submitting the following bids: Total Bid Based Bidder Price Per Ton on Est. Usage Dave Martin Supplies, El Cajon 5.00 20,000 H. G. Fenton Material Co. , San Diego 5.40 22,000 Nelson & Sloan, Chula Vista 5.80 23,200 The bid specifications call for pick up of material at vendor' s plant. The current City dump truck rates are $8.00 per hour and $10.93 for the driver. An average load of aggregate base is 7 tons. The cost to pick up a load at each plant is as follows: Dave Martin Supplies: Distance Round Trip - 34 Miles El Cajon Materials - 7 tons @ $5 + tax = $37.10 Truck - 1 .25 hrs @ $8 hr = 10.00 Driver - 1 .25 hrs @ $10.93 hr = 13.66 $60.76 H. G. Fenton Material Co. : Distance Round Trip - 44 Miles San Diego Material - 7 tons @ $5.40 = $40.07 Truck - 1 .5 hrs @ $8 hr = 12.00 Driver - 1 .5 hrs @ $10.93 hr = 16.40 $68.47 j,' Page 2, Item /7 Meeting Date 1/8/86 Nelson & S1oan: Distance Round Trip - 9 Miles Chula Vista Material - 7 tons @ $5.80 = $40.60 Truck - .5 hrs @ $8 hr = 4.00 Driver - .5 hr @ $10.93 hr = 5.47 $50.0/ Considering driving time and operating costs, it is more economical to pick up materials at Nelson & Sloan. It is the recommendation of the Director of Public Works/City Engineer that the contract be awarded to Nelson & Sloan. The FY 1985-86 price per ton was $5.80, FY 1984-85 was $5.70, and FY 1983-84 was $5.70. FISCAL IMPACT: Funds are provided for in the Gas Tax Fund.
