Item 14
Meeting Date 8/26/86
ITEM TITLE: Resolution/& 7:2,_7 Appropriating funds from the unappropriated balance
of the Equipment Replacement Fund for removal of the body from the old
fire rescue rig and installation on the new fire rescue rig
SUBMITTED BY: Public Works Director/City Engineer (4/5ths Vote: Yes X No )
Finance Director ,
REVIEWED BY: City Manager "
In Fiscal Year 1985-86, the City Council authorized $40,000 for replacement of a 1967
fire rescue rig. The cost was to include a new cab-and-chassis and mounting the body
from the old rig onto the new cab-and-chassis. On May 6, 1986, the City Council awarded
the bid for the new cab-and-chassis in the amount of $35,532.
RECOMMENDATION: That the City Council approve the resolution.
BOARDS/COMMISSIONS RECOMMENDATION: Not Applicable.
DISCUSSION:
The cost ($35,532) of the new cab-and-chassis was more than originally anticipated
because of improvements that were included in the specifications in order to reduce
the downtime and maintenance costs over the 15 year life of the rescue rig. Specifi-
cally, a diesel engine and an automatic transmission were features requested which
were not on the old cab-and-chassis. These features are expected to eliminate
significant maintenance problems we experienced with the old cab-and-chassis such as
rebuilding the transmission, rebuilding the engine, and replacing the clutch.
The cost of the new cab-and-chassis ($35,532) left only $4,468 in the budget to pay
for removing the body from the old fire rescue rig and installing it on the new cab-
and-chassis. At fiscal year end, the remaining budget was returned to fund balance
in the Equipment Replacement Fund.
Staff is now requesting authorization from the City Council to appropriate funds for
removal of the body from the old fire rescue rig and installation on the new cab-
and chassis. The estimated cost is $19,000 and includes a proposed modification
to the old body in order to improve safety. This modification involves construction
of a jump seat compartment at the front of the body to accommodate firefighters.
In the old fire rescue rig, firefighters stand on a running board on the back of the
rig.
FISCAL IMPACT: A total of $19,000 is required for removal of the body, its modifica-
tion, and installation on the new cab-and-chassis. Funds are available in the
unappropriated balance of the Equipment Replacement Fund.
