HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 1960-2378 RESOLUTION NO. 2378 RESOLUTION NO. 237$ A RESOLUTION URGING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A JUNIOR COLLEGE IN THE SWEETWATER UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT WHEREAS, the Sweetwater Union High School District, of which the City of Chula Vista is a part, is witnessing a dramatic rapid expansion in its population, and WHEREAS, business and industry are growing along with the population growth, and WHEREAS, in the Sweetwater Union High School District there is an increasingly large number of persons who are potential Junior College students who, if they wish to attend a Junior College, must travel to San Diego to attend, and WHEREAS, there is a sufficient number of potential Junior College students in the Sweetwater Union High School District to support a Junior College here, and WHEREAS, a college preparatory, two year school in this District and a school which is capable of giving advanced vocational train- ing would help to create more useful citizens that if said persons did not attacnd such a college , and WHEREAS, business and industry will also benefit by better trained persons in business and professions , and WHEREAS, The San Diego County Committee on School District N Organization as augmented for the study of Junior College education in the Sweetwater Union High School District has unanimously adopted atentatve resolution askeding the State Board of Education to start the machinery in action for the establishment of a Junior College in the Sweetwater Union High School District, and WHEREAS, the advantages of a Junior College in the Sweetwater Union High School District would: la Encourage persons who are potential Junior College Students to attend such an institution if it were located conveni- ently nearby; 2. Give valuable college preparatory and vocational train- ing to many persons who would themselves benefit by this training, and the community in turn would bene- fit by this additional education; 3. The cost of educating students in Junior Colleges is less expensive than in State Colleges or Universities; 4. State Colleges and Universities are becoming overcrowded and many persons will be deprived of an opportunity to attend college unless such a Junior College is provided locally; 5. Many adults, in addition to young persons, will be more likely to take courses of study which will aid them in their business and cultural lives, if such a Junior Col- lege were established locally; 6. Such a Junior College can become the cultural center of the community, where lectures, musical and theatrical events can be provided for the public, and WHEREAS, the citizens of this Sweetwater Union High School District are now paying twenty-four cents (24f) of each tax dollar for the Unior College education of persons from this Dis- trict who attend Junior Colleges in other areas, and WHEREAS, that twenty-,four cents plus another reasonable sum of money which would be necessary for capital expenditures to tionstruct buildings and facilities, could provide Junior College facilities here, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA: 1. That the establishment of a Junior College in the Sweet- water Union High School District would result in better citizens, who in turn, would create a better community. 2. The advantages, only a few of which have been enumerated above, are substantial and outweigh the small additional cost -2- • which would be necessary to provide a Junior College in this District. 3. The San Diego County Committee on School District Organization as augmented for the Study of Junior College edu- cation in the Sweetwater Union High School District, is urged to formally adopt its resolution to the State Board of Educa- tion, urging the commencement of proceedings to establish a Junior College in the Sweetwater Union High School District. 4. The State Board of Education is urged to, as rapidly as possible, start the machinery in action to establish a Junior College here. 5. The citizens of the City of Chula Vista and all citizens in the Sweetwater Union -High School District and surrounding areas who will have occasion to vote upon the proposition as to whether such a Junior College should beestablishod, are urged, when said election is held, to vote yes on that proposition. 6. A copy of this resolution shall be sent to the San Diego County Committee on School District Organization, c/o the County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Cecil :Hardesty, Civic Center, San Diego California; to the State Board of Education, Education Build- ing, 721 Capitol Avenue, Sacramento© California; to the Committee for the Establishment of a Junior College in the Sweetwater Union High School District, c/o Dr, Ralph Schrock; to the 3oaxd of Trustees, Sweetwater Union High School District, c/o Joseph Rindone, Superintendent; to Assemblyman Jack Schrade; to Assemblyman Sheridan Hegland; to Senator Hugo Fisher, ; to .Dry.
