HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 1994-17450RESOLUTION NO. 17450 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA ENDORSING AND SUPPORTING THE JUNE, 1994 MIRAMAR ADVISORY BALLOT MEASURE AND DESIGNATING MIRAMAR AS THE PREFERRED SITE FOR THE SAN DIEGO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT WHEREAS, the City of San Diego, the County of San Diego, and other governmental agencies in the San Diego Region have been searching for new ways of providing better airport service for the region, and as a result of the search, the County Board of Supervisors have placed an advisory measure on the June, 1994 ballot to determine the feasibility of Miramar as the preferred site for the San Diego International Airport; and, WHEREAS, the City of San Diego, Progress Guide and General Plan for airports is to support continued designation of Lindbergh Field as an airport and to pursue aggressively the use of NAS Miramar as the region's air carrier airport if all or a major portion of NAS Miramar is no longer required for national defense; and, WHEREAS, traffic congestion may well be detrimental to maximum use of Lingbergh Field. WHEREAS, in today's global market, the region may well require a full-service airport if it is to sustain in the 21st century a vibrant economy offering attractive employment, a sound environment and an enviable quality of life; and, WHEREAS, the region would be better served if the San Diego International Airport was located in the geographic center of the traveling public of San Diego County, in keeping with the California Transportation Plan, and to provide the best ground access; and, WHEREAS, the San Diego International Airport would be an improved asset if located in the geographic center of the air freight market to enhance economic visibility and diminish road congestion associated by truck traffic. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED the City Council of the City of Chula Vista does hereby support and endorse the June, 1994 Miramar Advisory Ballot Measure which states: "The people of San Diego do hereby reaffirm their strong support for the continued presence of the U. S. Military in the San Diego region. However, if the U. S. Government decides to make NAS Miramar available for civilian airport use, then should all government officials cooperate to make every effort to relocate Charles A. Lindbergh International Airport to Miramar?" lil Resolution No. 17450 Page 2 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City of Chula Vista supports Miramar as the preferred site for the region's international airport and urges all neighboring cities to support and endorse the June, 1994 Miramar Advisory Ballot Measure.
