of Owners for Undergrounding of Utilities

ITEM EXPLANATION
At present, any alteration or addition to a building, which has a permit value of $5,000
or more, requires the undergrounding of utilities. It is felt that this is no longer
reasonable as the cost of construction has increased significantly since the original
Undergrounding Utility Ordinance was passed. The Board of Appeals and Advisors, therefore,
feels that an amount of $20,000 or more, or 25% of the floor area is more equitable.
Single family dwellings on existing individual lots are deleted from this proposal in
that it is oftentimes difficult and costly to serve the building underground. In actuality,
the benefits accrued in having a single family dwelling in a developed area, underground
the utilities is minimal since utility undergrounding will not occur for many years.
At their meeting of May 25, 1976, Council accepted staff's recorrunendation for deletion
of reference to 25% of the floor area and directed staff to return with the revised
Ordinance to be placed on its First Reading.
