School District Unification -
The idea of unification is not a new one. There have been a fev unsuccessful attempts at it over
the decades. Ultimatelv, the Sweet=ater District has ahays strived to provide the best education
possible for our 41,000 students in grades 7-12 and over 22,000 adult leamers that span over four
municipalities and multiple neighborhoods.
The Saeehvater Union High School District does not believe that unification is a viable option
that should be further explored. A move to unification «ould have a significant impact on not
oniti- srudents in Chula Vista; but throuhout the South County and disrupt the educational
process for all students and families. This ould be comparable to asking the Citof Chula Vista
to merge vith National City or the southern portion of the Citv of San Diego.
As a stand-alone secondary district we have been successful in brineing essential prorams ro
students such as the Compact for Success; our guaranteed admission program to San Diego State
Uniersitr; a robust Visual and Performing Arts Program that imolves over 40% of all district
students, dual languaee prorams at six campuses and with more to be added in the future; career
pathvay programs at every middle and high school campus; and facilitv upgrades ihat have
transformed several schools in the district. Seetvater has deeloped strong partnerships and
collaborations with not only our four feeder elementarv districts, but with schools and districts
across the region; the state and the nation.
Since 1920, the Sweetvater Union High School District has sened the secondary students of
South Countv and ve look forn-ard to continuing our mission to ensure student success in
I'ational Citv; Imperial Beach, San Diego and Chula Vista.
