National Preparedness Month BACKGROUND •Launched in 2004 •FEMA’s national annual preparedness outreach THE READY CAMPAIGN •Designed to educate and empower Americans during NPM and throughout the year •Prepare and respond to all types of emergencies www.ready.gov Ready.gov ReadySanDiego.org Preparesandiego.org An American Red Cross Initiative •A 4 year resiliency campaign launched in September Community Disaster Education •Prepare –Assess the disasters that can occur in the community •Plan –Prepare for and react to disasters •Assemble a Kit –Gather the materials you need for safety and survival •Shelter Go-Kit •Car Kit What are the greatest risks in San Diego County and how do we prepare for them? FIRE EARTHQUAKE TSUNAMI FLOOD PUBLIC HEALTH TERRORISM Earthquake During the event… •Drop, cover and hold on •Stay away from windows and glass •Stay indoors until shaking stops •If outdoors, find a clear spot and drop to the ground •If in a vehicle, pull over to a clear location and stop Earthquake When the shaking stops… •Check yourself for injuries, then others •If outdoors, find a clear spot and drop to the ground •Carry out a hazard hunt, examine your home for small fires, fire hazards, or gas leaks.
