HomeMy WebLinkAbout2006-11-16 PRC MINSCity of Chula Vista Parks and Recreation Commission Minutes Thursday - 6:30 p.m. November 16, 2006 Montevalle Recreation Center 840 Duncan Ranch Rd Meeting called to order by Chair Rios at 6:35 p.m. Staff Present: Buck Martin, Director of Recreation Richard Hopkins, Assistant Director of Public Works Operations Shauna Stokes, Assistant Director of Recreation Brian Cox, Principal Recreation Manager Larry Eliason, Parks and Open Space Manager Ted Nelson, Recreation Supervisor III Manuel Gonzalez, Aquatics Supervisor III Steve Scott, Recreation Supervisor III Guests: John Teller, 2599 Lone Pine Ct, CV CA 91915 Roll Call /Motion to Excuse Members Present: Commissioner Salcido, Commissioner Rios, Commissioner Scott, Commissioner Perondi, Members Absent: Commissioner Ramos, Commissioner Searles, Commissioner Cien- Mayer, MSC (Salcido /Searles) to approve the absence of Commissioner Perondi and Ramos Before business was conducted, Commissioner Rios introduced Commissioner Scott to the meeting. Commissioner Scott briefly discussed her background and stated she was honored to have been appointed to the Commission. 2a. Approval of Minutes - Move to next meeting. Commissioner Searles stated that minutes that have been on the Agenda over a period of time can be approved out of necessity if a quorum is not present. Margarita responded that she would check with the Attorney's Office 2b. Consideration of canceling the December 21, 2006 Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting - MSC (Salcido /Cien -Mayer Vote 5 -0 -0 -2 Perondi and Ramos absent) to cancel the December 21St Parks and Recreation Commission meeting Parks and Recreation Commission - November 16, 2006 3a. Recognition of Parkway and Loma Verde Pools by Aquatics International - Mr. Gonzalez, (Aquatics Supervisor III) informed the Commission that both Parkway and Loma Verde Pools were recognized by Aquatics International as Best Public /Nonprofit Outdoor Family Aquatics Center. With more than 100,000 in attendance annually, these facilities accommodate the growing and diverse Chula Vista community. b. Recognition of Steve Scott, Recreation Supervisor III by the Southern California Municipal Athletics Federation (SCMAF) - Mr. Martin (Director of Recreation) recognized Mr. Scott (Recreation Supervisor III) for his dedicated 23 -year service to SCMAF. Mr. Scott stated that he was President of SCMAF for 6 years. C. Field Closures - Mr. Cox (Principal Recreation Manager) informed the Commission of field closures for field maintenance purposes. He noted that Otay would be closed for 6 months d. Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting Dates for 2007 - Mr. Martin discussed the meeting dates for 2007. 4. Unfinished Business: None S. New Business: None 6. Written Communications: None Commission Comments: Commissioner Salcido asked if it was possible to add Youth Sports Council information to the quarterly brochure (e.g. contact phone numbers to YSC). Commissioner Rios does not agree with listing personal phone numbers to YSC members. Mr. Martin asked if this information was being considered as a point of reference or advertisement. Commissioner Salcido responded that it was for contact reference. Commissioner Searles stated that the City of Chula Vista should not be held responsible for paying the additional cost incurred with providing this information in the quarterly brochure. Ms. Stokes (Assistant Director of Recreation) responded that other agencies listed in the brochure pay for their information. Commissioner Scott stated that she concurs with Commissioner Salcido in providing this type information in the brochure. Commissioner Cien -Mayer stated that she thinks it's a good service to the community by providing this additional information. Parks and Recreation Commission - November 16, 2006 Ms. Stokes responded that staff would take this request under consideration and provide cost information at the next meeting. Commissioner Searles stated that parks and recreation programming are great. In addition, thinks new pools are needed to accommodate growing community. Commissioner Scott is impressed with the recreation facilities available to the community. 8. Staff Comments Mr. Martin recapped the monthly report that was submitted to the Commission Commissioner Salcido asked if there were plans for a new aquatics facility. Mr. Martin responded that an aquatics facility was identified in the Parks and Recreation Master Plan. Mr. Hopkins (Assistant Director of Public Works Operations) informed the Commission that Winding Walk Park would be opening soon. In addition, he informed the Commission about the homeless issue at Lauderbach Park and that strategies were being looked at to make the park more user friendly.
