RESOLTJTION OF THE CITY COULdCIL OF TH.E CITY OF CHULA VISTA
URGING CONGRESS TO ENACT A MINIMUM WAGE LAW TO COVER FARM
WORKERS
T1.e City Council of the City of Chula Vista does hereby
resolve as follcws:
WHEREAS, the continuing labor dispute between the farm
workers and the growers throughout the State of California, and
more especially in the South Eay area creates serious social and
economic problems for the entire community, and
47HERL•AS, the failure to resolve the bracero and migratory
farm worker problem and the closely related problem of the labor
dispute between the growers of the Chula Vista area and the
Agricultural WorY.ers Ur.ion has a mar}:ed effect on one of the most
essential segments of our local economy, and
WHEREAS, the problem which must be resolved between the
workers and growers is further compounded by the existing differential
between the hourly wages presently being paid to farm workers in
this area and the wages being paid in the Southern States, partic-
ularly Alabama and Mississippi, and '
WHEREAS, this marked difference ir. said wages makes the
produce of the Southern States available at much lower prices and
therefore makes fair. and equitable competiticn for local and
national markets between California growers and Southern growers
impcssible, and
WHEREAS, the only means of restoring competitive advantages
to the California growers, which caould be beneficial to both the
growers and the farm workers is to adopt a national minimum wage
law to cover all farm workers, and
WHEREAS, the adoption of such a law would have direct effect
upon our local economy, providing assurance. of the continuing growtr.
and existence of the agricultural industry and jobs for hundreds of
farm workers.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the
City of Chula Vista, on behalf of themselves and the citizens of
this community, that the Congress of the United States be urged to
adopt a national minimum wage law, covering farm workers throughout
the United States in the interests of maintaining a fair and equitable
competitive situation in the agricultural market.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk of the City of
Chula Vista be, and he is hereby directed to forward certified copies

of .this resolution to the Honorable Senator Thomas H. Kuchel, the
Honorable Senator George Murphy-,,. the Honorable Congressman Lionel

~ Van Deerlin, the Honorable Congressman Bob Wilson, Secretary of
Labor, W. T.~Tillard Wirtz, and Secretary of Agriculture Orville L. Freeman.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk is directed to
send a certified copy of this resolution to the Vice President of
the United States Hubert Humphrey',.since the solution of this
particular agricultural problem has a direct bearing upon the economy
of our urban community of Chula Vista.
