Naples Ct Chula Vista, CA 91910 CALL TO ORDER ROLL CALL: Present: Gene Pellerin, John Acosta, Terry Jensen Excused: Stephen Sprenkle, Keith Blum Absent: PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG 1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: 2. ACTION ITEMS ^ Veteran of the Year: Gene Pellerin announced Virgil Whitehead as the Veteran of the Year. His proclamation as Chula Vista's Veteran of the Year will be held, Tuesday August 4, 2009 at the City Council meeting. ^ CDVA Cuts: Waiting on legislation to be voted. ^ Job Fair: Terry Jensen stated the job fair was held June 6, 2009 at Balboa Park. 1,000 people came through, 1/3 or more were veterans. The job fair was a success, the employers were happy with the outcome. Next year's job fair will be held the first Saturday in June and will be held the first Saturday in June from now on. With the status of the economy, 3,000 people were expected to attend. ^ Special Court hearings: Gene Pellerin discussed special court hearings for veterans with mental/health limitations known as Veterans Court. Gene recommended a letter be sent in support of the Veterans Court. Terry Jensen would like to see the copy of the bill beforehand. Gene will talk to Chula Vista Legal Council and will contact Mary Salas's Office for an electronic copy of the bill. ^ Veterans Home Rose Garden Ceremony: Mary Salas presided over the Rose Garden ceremony. Bob White read a biography on one of the Chula Vista veterans. Roses were dedicated to 10 veteran names, which were given to Mary Salas's office. ^ Civic Center Library update: John Acosta stated there is currently no update. ^ San Diego State Ceremony: John Acosta San Diego State's Student Veteran • Organization will be having a ceremony October 25, 2009. John will send an email with more information. J • 3. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS: None Comments/ Adjourn 4. ADJOURNMENT The Veterans Advisory Commission will adjourn to the next regular meeting scheduled on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at 5:30pm at the Chula Vista Veteran's Home 700 E. Naples Court Chula Vista, CA 91910.
