CALL TO ORDER
ROLL CALL: Present: Gene Pellerin, John Acosta, Terry Jensen, Keith Blum, Virgil

2. ACTION ITEMS
• Chula Vista Veterans Wing Update- Stephanie Loney reported on the status of the
Veterans Wing. Painting has been completed, as well as carpeting, furniture and
patriotic artwork and fireplace have been installed. Desk/office and Veterans Wing sign
are pending. The possible use of office space for "Operation Welcome Home" was
discussed. This would be temporary until the space in the veteran's wing has some
partitions installed that will provide some privacy for veterans being interviewed. Grand
Opening Ceremonies are set for June 4, 2010. Representative Filner to attend along
with Mayor Cox and other dignitaries. There will also be a military band and color guard.
• City of Chula Vista Flag Calendar- Gene Pellerin received an email from Mayor's office
regarding flag calendar recommendations for POW flag. Date recommendations were
given.
• Veteran Bio-Gene Pellerin currently working on research project for Lt. John Phillip
Sanderson USN, WWII deceased veteran. The Veterans Advisory Commission website
has a small paragraph on him. Research is being dong to update biography.
Veteran of the Year- Gene Pellerin stated Virgil Whitehead is the Veteran of the Year for
San Diego County for 2009/2010. Gene asked commissioners to start thinking of
recommendations for Veteran of the Year for 2010/2011.

Alex Galicia discussed follow-up with Council member Rudy Ramirez regarding
percentage the City of Chula Vista give to disabled veteran's business and stated there
is currently no policy set in place. Council member Ramirez added the Finance
Department will look into the general procurement policy and if they see a good fit they
will adopt a policy. Keith Blum suggested the VAC make a formal recommendation to the
Mayor. Gene Pellerin asked Alex Galicia to make a recommendation and present it at
next meeting.
Gene Pellerin discussed letter sent from Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in response
to the recommendation for Margaret Ann Ulrich for the position of Administrator for the
Department of Califonia Veterans Home, Chula Vista.
4. ADJOURNMENT
The Veterans Advisory Commission will adjourn to the next regular meeting scheduled
on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at 6:OOpm at the Chula Vista Veteran's Home 700 E.
Naples Court Chula Vista, CA 91910.
