PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG
1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes of the October meeting will be approved in
February's meeting.
2. ACTION ITEMS:
^ Chula Vista Starlight Parade- John Acosta stated the parade was a success. Willie
• Nunez lent a truck, which was decorated with Christmas lights and flags, which were
borrowed from the Veterans Home. The Marine Corp League donated $40 for gasoline.
• Veteran of the Year- Gene Pellerin discussed veteran of the year nominations and
stated names should be submitted by late May or early June. Gene asked if anyone
would like to take on responsibilities for submitting the Veteran of the Year.
^ Veteran's Activities- Virgil Whitehead discussed the following activities:
The John Smith Garden dedication was well done and well attended. Gene Pellerin was
the Master of Ceremony.
Americorps is established in San Diego County and will be positioned in the Veteran
Home starting this Friday, January 21, 2011.
DAV/Americorps will co-host a "Veteran Benefit Seminar" on Wednesday, February 23`d
2011 at 1300 hours at the Chula Vista Library.
The California Veteran Homes are located in Chula Vista, Barstow, Yountsville, Ventura,
West LA, and Lancaster. The Veterans Homes in Redding and Lancaster are underway.
Veterans Village reports that all construction is completed. Over 3,000 homeless
Veterans are in San Diego County.
Marine Corps League, Navy League and Americorps are doing the "Meet and Greet" for
Miramar. Planning to expand to 32"d street, volunteers and money are needed.
Lowes and Home Depot are offering a 10% discount.
Joe Bruner, Veteran Parade Chairman is requesting volunteers and donations.
Midway Museum is requesting Volunteers. Must make a monthly commitment.
Miramar National Cemetery is still on track for February 2, 2011.
3`d Bn, 5th Marine Ret, 1St Mar Div will return around the 1st of March. A "Meet and Greet"
is planned. A cookout is planned after the Memorial Service.
DOD announces Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Commemoration Program. DOD
representatives will coordinate with other federal agencies, veteran groups, state, local
government and non-government organizations for their input in Vietnam War
commemoration activities. For more information call 877-387-9951.

^ Gene Pellerin stated the commission for Aging is interested in attending a Veteran's
Activities Meeting and will be attending possibly next month's VAC meeting.

Comments/ Adjourn:
Virgil Whitehead mentioned there is a Veterans information center off Bonita Road. Virgil
will look into what services they provide, as well as contact information.
4. ADJOURNMENT
The meeting adjourned at 7:00 PM. The Veterans Advisory Commission will have the
next regular meeting on Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at the Chula Vista Veterans' Home, 700 E.
Naples Court.
