Nature Center Recycling Exhibit Tour Lead Educator for the Nature Center, Katie Wedemeyer discussed the new "Washed Ashore" exhibit at the Chula Vista Nature Center. The exhibit features sculptures of marine animals fashioned from marine debris and plastics that have washed ashore from the ocean. Wedemeyer stated that all the plastics that are part of the exhibit were found on only a 20-mile span of beach in Southern Oregon that the artist collected along with community partners, schools, and local volunteer organizations. She said that in under eighteen months, they were able to turn over 7,000 pounds of debris into the sculptures. She further stated that everything was used just as it had been found, and that the only processing done to the items was washing them and sorting them into different colors and sizes. She added that no plastic adhesive had been used in creating the sculptures-that each individual piece had been hand-drilled and wired together so that no additional plastic was used in the production of it. She then conducted the tour. • RCC Minutes, 2/13/12, Page 1 of 2 2.
