CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION
Monday, January 12, 2009 Library Conference Room
5:45 p.m. Civic Center Library
1. Call to Order/ Roll Call
Commission Chair Voorhees called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m.
Commissioners Present: Voorhees, Bolles, Deavenport,
Fessia, Glenn, Liston, Smith
Commissioners Absent: Knowlton (Excused),
O'Shaughnessy (Excused)
Staff Present: Love, Noguera
Others Present: Bruce Groff, Hilltop High School

2. Approval of Minutes
The approval of meeting minutes from the December 10 meeting will take place
at the next meeting.
3. Public Comments
Bruce Groff announced that an art show reception, displaying Sweetwater Union
High School District students' works will be on March 6 at the South Chula Vista
Branch starting at 6pm. Commissioners are encouraged to attend.

7. Oral Communications
Commission Chair Voorhees:
-For next month's meeting:
Under Old Business, recap of Mayor Cox's visit to the December Cultural Arts
Commission Meeting and partnering with the Chula Vista Public Library
Foundation.
-For New Business, discussion of the proposed 1 % sales tax increase and
locations and events for art exhibits.
Commission Vice Chair Bolles:
-The Chula Vista Arts Foundation canceled the December meeting. The next
meeting is scheduled for January 14.
Commissioner Deavenport:
-Met with Debbie Taylor and Joy Whatley from the Chula Vista Public Library to
discuss the California Ballet Association's participation in this year's summer
reading program. The program's theme is "Being Creative with the Library',
which will emphasize the impact of art education.
Commissioner Liston:
-Mentioned that the art departments in the school districts are more efficiently
and effectively bringing arts and culture together to showcase what the City of
Chula Vista has to offer.
Commissioner Fessia:
-Suggested creating a master list of art organizations. This tool will become a
useful source of information specific to Chula Vista and will give the community
access to events that are taking place. It will also help the Cultural Arts
Commission establish relationships with these groups.
Staff member Love:
-Library card design contest reception will be held on Friday, January 23 at 6:30
p.m. at the Civic Center Branch Library.
-The 2009 Performing and Visual Arts Grant application is available on the
library's website. The deadline for submission is January 30.
8. Adjournment
Adjournment was made at 6:44 p.m. The next Cultural Arts Commission meeting
will be held at 5:45pm on, Monday, February 9, 2009 in the Library Conference
Room of the Civic Center Library.
