Vice-Chair Bolles attended March's board meeting. The group discussed
their main focus being on the Junior Theater and the prospect of
renovating the former Social Security building (at Third Ave and Park

scheduled for the end of April. There are multiple groups interested in the
old Social Security building.

6. Staff Updates
• a. Performing and Visual Arts Grant -Love
Staff member Love announced that the total amount requested from grant
applicants was $45,000; $41,450 was awarded.
b. SUHSD Art Show at South Chula Vista Library -Love
Staff member Love mentioned that the reception that was held on March 6
was well attended by 400 people. It was suggested that the Cultural Arts
Commission present the Community Award at future receptions.
c. BudgetlStaffing Update -Love
Staff member Love will be handling the administrative tasks for the Cultural
Arts Commission as there will be no secretary to continue those
responsibilities. Synergy is the name of a new statue that is being placed at
the bay front; it may or may not have already been installed.
At this time, the Commission recognized staff member Marylyn Noguera for
her devoted service to the Cultural Arts Commission and the City of Chula
Vista for the past three years.
He also mentioned that library programming has been reduced drastically
until new funding is realized (dependent on the outcome of the proposed
• sales tax increase). Also, the library has proposed the reduction in hours and
days at all three branches should no new revenue be found. This will effect
staff member Love's position, and could cause there to be a need to change
time and location of meetings in the future.
7. Oral Communications
Staff member Love announced the resignation of Kerry Knowlton from the
Cultural Arts Commission effective March 14. He also reported that the Chula
Vista Public Library Foundation received communication from Commissioner
Voorhees about the Cultural Arts Commission partnering with the Foundation at
events the Foundation hosts. The purpose of this partnership would be to allow
the Commission to instill arts into Foundation events, and to let the Foundation
act as a fiscal agent if necessary.
Commissioner Glenn announced that the Chula Vista Ballet has received its
501(3c), non-profit status. She also announced the upcoming presentation of
"Thumbelina" this summer at Eastlake High School.
Commissioner Vice-Chair Bolles announced the upcoming ground-breaking
event for a new performing arts venue at Chula Vista High School in May. It will
have 700 seats and will provide adequate wing space for a band room, dance
. floor and choir rooms. It will also have a technology room, lobby and
concessions area. He also mentioned the creation of the Arts Academy at New
Hope Church Community that already has 165 kids signed up.
