MINUTES
CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION
Monday, May 10, 2010 Library Conf. Room

1. Call to Order/ Roll Call
Commissioner Bolles called the meeting to order at 5:15 p.m. and asked the secretary
to call the roll.
Commissioners Present: Bolles, Deavenport, McDermott, Fessia, Hernandez;
Smith; Berndt
Commissioners Absent: Voorhees- excused
• 2. Approval of Minutes
A motion to approve minutes of March 8th, 2010 was made by the Chairman, and
seconded by Commissioner Deavenport after a correction was made to incorporate
points a and d on page 2.
The Chairman welcomed Mr. AI Gore to the Commission although Mr. Gore was not
present in his official capacity as a commissioner since he would be sworn in on
5/11/10.
3. Public Comments
No members of the public present.
4. Old Business
a. Sculpture Garden -McDermott
Ms. McDermott was prepared to show a presentation from Southwestern College
but was unable to convert to the software version to be viewed. She offered to
forward the presentation to the commissioners.

• The Commissioners agreed that the City was eager to support this project and it
would serve as an entranceway to the Downtown Area. The Chairman explained
that the original idea was for a fluid exhibition of sculptures for periods. He also
noted that Southwestern College should be given credit on the signage if their
proposal were to be accepted.
Ms. Loney to send a letter in a positive tone to TAVA requesting the move of the
"Lollypop Trees"
The commissioners discussed the costs and the availability of funding from the
Redevelopment Department; staff to communicate to SWC the availability of funds
and discuss the cost of their proposed items. Ms. Deavenport said that once the
proposal was concrete ie the City is behind it, then grants can be requested from
some of the businesses around, eg, Bank of America
b. Updating the Chula vista Arts Directory
Commissioners Fessia and Berndt are to agree on a firm date is to determined a
meeting schedule and discuss an action plan.
The Chairman asked for manpower assistance to work on grant renewal for Arts in
the Community for the South Bay area.
• Commissioner Berndt commented on the online form being accessible to artists to
join in and the commission should also use blogs and "MySpace". They all agreed
to work on getting the word out of the availability of the directory. It was agreed that
a link to the directory from the City's website would be feasible and that one
commissioner would monitor the incoming forms that will be submitted
electronically. Ms. Loney to liaise with City's ITS personnel.
c. Chula Vista Arts Foundation
Ms. Souval had attended the last meeting, the Chairman said that he felt the
interest in the group was waning.
5. New Business
a. Pen`orming and ~isua/Arts Grant
Commissioner Hernandez excused herself due to personal interest. Ms. Loney
informed the group that the task force had made their determinations and the
item went to Council on May 24t". She distributed the breakdown list of the
recipients and the amounts of their award for the information of the group. This
was retrieved after discussion of the matter was completed and Ms. Hernandez
rejoined the meeting.
6. Staff Updates
a. McCandlis Grant
Ms. Loney informed the commissioners that the application form was slightly
revised with a deadline of July 1~. and an award the award to be at the end of
August or beginning of September. This information is on the Library's website
and there will be a press release. The Sweetwater Union High School District is
aware of this. The Chairman stated that he would like the next year's notices to
go out earlier as it would be better for the graduates.
7. Oral Communications
Commissioner Bolles cited a newspaper article about Northpark and Art as an
economic engine for the community.
He also circulated a flyer for a concert on Friday 14, May and noted that it would
look good for the Commission to be in attendance.
He informed the commission of a new group in the area, The South Bay Alliance
for Arts in Education, who are lobbying for SB2446 and have received about 14
thousand emails.
• 8. Adjournment
Mr. Bolles adjourned the meeting at 6:15 p.m. The next Cultural Arts Commission
meeting will be held on August 13, 2010 at 5:00 p.m., Chula Vista Public Library,
Civic Center main floor Conference Room.
