Commissioners Valerie Attisha and Katarzyna Lappin presented self-
introductions to the Commission members.

that there are still two vacancies and the Mayor's Office is continuing to
seek candidates for the vacancies.
B. Election of Vice-Chairperson
Chair McDermott nominated Commissioner Gore. Motion seconded by
Commissioner Berndt and approved by Commission elected Mr. Gore as
Vice-Chair for FY 11-12.
V. Library Staff Report
A. Performing & Visual Arts Fund Grant Application Packet
The FY-11 grant checks were issued in July. The PVAG task force
awarded 27 grants last year. Only one applicant was not awarded a grant
• due to the request for equipment. The grant cannot be funded for
equipment.
One grant recipient has asked about the use of the City logo and was
informed not to use the City's logo when advertising or presenting his/her
project. This has been noted in the 2012 application packet.
Commissioner Rodriguez suggested the Commission should apply for the
grant as well. A discussion followed and ideas for a collaborated event
were considered. The Commission will give the suggestion more thought
and will re-visit this item at the January meeting.
B. Gayle McCandliss Arts Awards Packet
Stephanie presented the amended application guidelines to allow junior
high students to apply -not just senior students.
Vice-Chair Gore commented that it has been difficult in the past to get art
instructors involved to nominate a student. Mr. Gore suggested the
Commission should also contact the Parent-Teacher Associations at the
schools.
Stephanie stated that staff will publish on the Library website.
2
Vice-Chair Gore made a motion to accept the application guideline
• amendment to allow students in their junior year of high school to apply
for the award. Motion seconded by Chair McDermott and approved by the
Commission.
C. Port of San Diego Commission for Arts & Culture
Stephanie received an email invitation from the Port of San Diego to
attend the monthly Port of San Diego Commission for Arts & Culture
meeting. Stephanie will attend their next meeting scheduled for
November 17, 2011 and will report back to the Commission on items of
interest.
VI. Public Comments/Communications
A. Susan Johnson thanked everyone who participated at the County Arts
Council Community Forum on November 10th. Councilwoman
Bensoussan will be hosting another event in the Eastlake area. The intent
of the forum is to get feedback on whether other cities are interested in
creating a countywide cultural arts commission. Approximately 20-25
people participated.

Meeting was adjourned at 5:50 pm by Chair McDermott
The next regular meeting of the Cultural Arts Commission is scheduled for
Monday, January 9, 2012 at 5:00 pm at the Civic Center Branch Library,
