Approval of Minutes Motion made by Chairperson McDermott and seconded by Commissioner Gore to approve the Minutes from the May 9, 2011 meeting. III. Old Business A. Arts Directory No report -previous Commissioner Bolles was the lead for the project. Stephanie will contact Dr. Feilen to find out about the status of their directory and obtain a general update on the program. B. Sculpture Garden Stephanie reported that no progress has been made since the discussion at the Commission's March meeting. L IV. New Business A. Introduction of New Commissioners Commissioners Valerie Attisha and Katarzyna Lappin presented self- introductions to the Commission members. Stephanie welcomed the new members and reminded the Commission that there are still two vacancies and the Mayor's Office is continuing to seek candidates for the vacancies. B. Election of Vice-Chairperson Chair McDermott nominated Commissioner Gore. Motion seconded by Commissioner Berndt and approved by Commission elected Mr. Gore as Vice-Chair for FY 11-12. V. Library Staff Report A. Performing & Visual Arts Fund Grant Application Packet The FY-11 grant checks were issued in July. The PVAG task force awarded 27 grants last year. Only one applicant was not awarded a grant • due to the request for equipment. The grant cannot be funded for equipment. One grant recipient has asked about the use of the City logo and was informed not to use the City's logo when advertising or presenting his/her project. This has been noted in the 2012 application packet. Commissioner Rodriguez suggested the Commission should apply for the grant as well. A discussion followed and ideas for a collaborated event were considered. The Commission will give the suggestion more thought and will re-visit this item at the January meeting. B. Gayle McCandliss Arts Awards Packet Stephanie presented the amended application guidelines to allow junior high students to apply -not just senior students. Vice-Chair Gore commented that it has been difficult in the past to get art instructors involved to nominate a student. Mr. Gore suggested the Commission should also contact the Parent-Teacher Associations at the schools. Stephanie stated that staff will publish on the Library website. 2 Vice-Chair Gore made a motion to accept the application guideline • amendment to allow students in their junior year of high school to apply for the award. Motion seconded by Chair McDermott and approved by the Commission. C. Port of San Diego Commission for Arts & Culture Stephanie received an email invitation from the Port of San Diego to attend the monthly Port of San Diego Commission for Arts & Culture meeting. Stephanie will attend their next meeting scheduled for November 17, 2011 and will report back to the Commission on items of interest. VI. Public Comments/Communications A. Susan Johnson thanked everyone who participated at the County Arts Council Community Forum on November 10th. Councilwoman Bensoussan will be hosting another event in the Eastlake area. The intent of the forum is to get feedback on whether other cities are interested in creating a countywide cultural arts commission. Approximately 20-25 people participated. VII. Adjournment Meeting was adjourned at 5:50 pm by Chair McDermott The next regular meeting of the Cultural Arts Commission is scheduled for Monday, January 9, 2012 at 5:00 pm at the Civic Center Branch Library, located at 365 F Street, Chula Vista. •
