CITY OF CHULA VISTA Chair McDermott, Vice-Chair Gore, Commissioners Attisha, Camacho, Lappin and Rodriguez Commissioner Bernt Staff Liaison Stephanie Loney Dr. Feilen and Students from SDSU I. Call to Order /Roll Call Chair McDermott called the meeting to order at 5:05 pm. II. Approval of Minutes Motion made by Vice-Chair Gore and seconded by Chair McDermott to approve the Minutes from the November 14, 2011 meeting. Motion carried. III. Old Business A. Arts Directory (deferred to end of meeting) B. Sculpture Garden Commission concurred that the project had stalled and the centennial year had passed. Requested that the Public Art Policy is approved sometime soon. IV. New Business A. Commissioners were reminded to email their intention to attend or planned absence. 1 B. Vice-Chair Gore informed the Commission of the Courthouse as an exhibit space. He expressed interest in seeing more exhibits there. Anyone with possible exhibit contacts should let Commissioner Rodriguez know. C. Vice-Chair Gore suggested the Commission partner with other groups like Foundations, arts support group fundraisers, and PTA's to generally promote the Commission and the arts. Possibly have a booth at Community events? D. Commissioner Attisha and the staff liaison will work on communicating to the schools (Principals and Art Department Staff) about commission and grant opportunities. V. Library Staff Report A. The Performing and Visual Arts grant is now posted online. The Gayle McCandliss Award is also posted online. Press releases for both have gone out. B. Staff Liaison Loney attended the Port of San Diego's Public Art Commission meeting and heard arguments for and against "Unconditional Surrender", a realistic sculpture of the iconic photograph. That Commission rejected the proposal for this work to be installed on the Embarcadero. • VI. Public Comments/Communications A. Communications received from the following: 1) The San Diego Youth Symphony ("Opus Project") 2) The San Diego Museum of Art 3) The Casa Familia (upcoming Dia de la Mujer Art Exhibit -January 18, 2012) B. Dr. Feilen (SDSU) commented on the progress of the Arts (web) directory that her students have been working on. She was accompanied by five students, of various disciplines. Features of the website they have developed include a calendar, funding opportunities, advocates, artists, and mapping (of local venues.) Dr. Feilen also informed the Commission of an upcoming event on February 11, 2012 "Heart on Center" that will feature live music, local arts, and interactive arts. There is a downloadable entry form for the event and a Facebook page. VII. Adjournment Meeting was adjourned at 6:35 pm by Chair McDermott The next regular meeting of the Cultural Arts Commission is scheduled for Monday, March 12, 2012 at 5:00 pm at the Civic Center Branch Library, located at 365 F Street, Chula Vista. ~~~ 2 ~~ ~,~
