A. San Diego Superior Court Art Display Update (Gore/Lappin)
Chair Gore stated that Commissioner Lappin had the opportunity to set-up a
fantastic exhibit at the South Bay Courthouse. Don Johnson assisted
Commissioner Lappin with the art display and spoke with several employees
of courthouse who expressed how happy they were to see the art exhibit.
Commissioner Lappin stated that the Courthouse is a great place for local
artists to display their artwork. They were able to fill up one wall, but there
are two large walls still available. It is the Commission's goal to rotate the
artwork every three or four months. Many people approached her during
installation of her exhibit, expressing their interest to seeing more artwork.
Chair Gore asked Commissioner Lappin if there is anything we should be
aware of to help other artists display their work.
•
Commissioner Lappin stated that the South Bay Artists Association will be
able to help collect the artwork. They meet twice a month at the Chula
• Vista Marina. The second Saturday of the month is a business meeting,
and the fourth Saturday of month is more a social meeting. Don and
Susan Johnson will help coordinate the art collection and display.
Chair Gore suggested that Commission should reach out to children at the
local schools. The students' artwork should able be displayed at the
Courthouse.
Commissioner Rodriguez stated the Sweetwater High School District
displays their exhibits at South Chula Vista Library. She suggested their
exhibits be moved to courthouse for display after the South Chula Vista
Library. The South Bay Artists Association would be a better source to
reach out to the schools. Since the Commission has asked them to
coordinate the project, they should decide on the exhibits.
Staff Liaison Loney said she would provide Sweetwater Union High
School District contact information to the South Bay Artists Association.

Stephanie reminded the Commission that there are three categories to the

C. Cultural Arts Commissioner Vacancies Update
Stephanie informed the Commission that two new members will be
coming on board. Council approval is expected later this month and the

VI. Public Comments/Communications
A. Chair Gore suggested name badges for Commissioners and will provide
some suggestions at a future meeting.
Stephanie reminded the Commission that there is no budget for this
Commission.
Vice-Chair Rodriguez stated that she did not mind paying for her own.
• Stephanie stated that the Library has blank Cultural Arts Commission
business cards (without names). The Library can also post information for
the Commission on our website. She will ask the Office of
Communications about posting guidelines.
B. Vice-Chair Rodriguez presented the idea of a "Cow Parade". She stated
that there is a European company which provides big ceramic white cows
to local artists to paint and display. The Cows would be placed around the
city for people to see. When the show is over, cows are auctioned and the
money goes to City.
Stephanie advised the Commission to put together a written project
proposal and present to City Council if they would like to pursue this
project.
Chair Gore agreed that the Commission should present a PowerPoint
show in front of the City Council.
Vice-Chair Rodriguez stated that the City Council needs to be made
aware of the community's desire and reception to more art displays. Vice-
Chair Rodriguez stated that she will contact the company and asked
Commissioner Lappin to contact local artists to determine if there is an
interest in participating in the project.
C. Commissioner Lappin requested clarification regarding communications
amongst the Commission members. If a Commissioner has a question
• after a meeting, did they have to wait two months for the next Commission
meeting to discuss it?
Stephanie suggested that the best thing to do is to contact her with the
question and she will contact the whole Commission and coordinate the
questions and responses to the entire group.
D. Chair Gore stated that the Commission missed great opportunities last
year due to lack of quorum. Chair Gore inquired where they can increase
the number of meetings.
Vice-Chair Rodriguez agreed that only meeting only every other month is
insufficient.
Stephanie replied that a Special Meeting may be called by the Chair if
there is an urgent agenda item to be discussed and action taken.
