HomeMy WebLinkAbout2012-07-09 CAC MINS• ~~~r, CITY OF CHULA VISTA CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Meeting Minutes Monday, July 9, 2012 Civic Center Branch Library 5:00 pm Conference Room Commissioners Present: Commissioners Absent: City Staff Present: Others Present: Call to Order /Roll Call Chair Gore, Commissioners Lappin and Rodriguez Commissioners Attisha and Camacho Staff Liaison Stephanie Loney None Chair Gore called the meeting to order at 5:05 pm. II. Approval of Minutes Motion made by Commissioner Rodriguez and seconded by Commissioner Lappin to approve the Minutes from the May 21, 2012 meeting. Motion carried. III. Old Business A. San Diego Superior Court Art Display Update (Gore/Lappin) Chair Gore stated that Commissioner Lappin had the opportunity to set-up a fantastic exhibit at the South Bay Courthouse. Don Johnson assisted Commissioner Lappin with the art display and spoke with several employees of courthouse who expressed how happy they were to see the art exhibit. Commissioner Lappin stated that the Courthouse is a great place for local artists to display their artwork. They were able to fill up one wall, but there are two large walls still available. It is the Commission's goal to rotate the artwork every three or four months. Many people approached her during installation of her exhibit, expressing their interest to seeing more artwork. Chair Gore asked Commissioner Lappin if there is anything we should be aware of to help other artists display their work. • Commissioner Lappin stated that the South Bay Artists Association will be able to help collect the artwork. They meet twice a month at the Chula • Vista Marina. The second Saturday of the month is a business meeting, and the fourth Saturday of month is more a social meeting. Don and Susan Johnson will help coordinate the art collection and display. Chair Gore suggested that Commission should reach out to children at the local schools. The students' artwork should able be displayed at the Courthouse. Commissioner Rodriguez stated the Sweetwater High School District displays their exhibits at South Chula Vista Library. She suggested their exhibits be moved to courthouse for display after the South Chula Vista Library. The South Bay Artists Association would be a better source to reach out to the schools. Since the Commission has asked them to coordinate the project, they should decide on the exhibits. Staff Liaison Loney said she would provide Sweetwater Union High School District contact information to the South Bay Artists Association. IV. New Business A. Election of Vice-Chair for FY 2012-13 Chair Gore asked for a volunteer for Vice-Chair; Commissioner Rodriguez volunteer. Motion made by Chair Gore and seconded by Commissioner Lappin to elect Commissioner Rodriguez as Vice-Chair for FY 2012-13. V. Library Staff Report A. Performing & Visual Arts Fund Grant Update Staff Liaison Loney reported that checks were mailed to recipients. Stephanie will be revising next year's application guidelines to include that grant funding cannot be used as prize money. A press release and the online application will be posted before Thanksgiving. Applications will be accepted until February 2013. B. Gayle McCandliss Arts Awards Council Presentation scheduled for July 17, 2012 at 10:00 am. Stephanie requested Commissioners to attend if their schedules permit. Chair Gore stated that the will attend the City Council meeting. 2 Chair Gore suggested that next year the Commission should get more involved with soliciting applications. Commissioner Rodriguez suggested • the Commission should seek out someone to nominate Stephanie reminded the Commission that there are three categories to the Gayle McCandliss Awards. C. Cultural Arts Commissioner Vacancies Update Stephanie informed the Commission that two new members will be coming on board. Council approval is expected later this month and the Commissioners will be able to join the Commission at the September meeting. VI. Public Comments/Communications A. Chair Gore suggested name badges for Commissioners and will provide some suggestions at a future meeting. Stephanie reminded the Commission that there is no budget for this Commission. Vice-Chair Rodriguez stated that she did not mind paying for her own. • Stephanie stated that the Library has blank Cultural Arts Commission business cards (without names). The Library can also post information for the Commission on our website. She will ask the Office of Communications about posting guidelines. B. Vice-Chair Rodriguez presented the idea of a "Cow Parade". She stated that there is a European company which provides big ceramic white cows to local artists to paint and display. The Cows would be placed around the city for people to see. When the show is over, cows are auctioned and the money goes to City. Stephanie advised the Commission to put together a written project proposal and present to City Council if they would like to pursue this project. Chair Gore agreed that the Commission should present a PowerPoint show in front of the City Council. Vice-Chair Rodriguez stated that the City Council needs to be made aware of the community's desire and reception to more art displays. Vice- Chair Rodriguez stated that she will contact the company and asked Commissioner Lappin to contact local artists to determine if there is an interest in participating in the project. C. Commissioner Lappin requested clarification regarding communications amongst the Commission members. If a Commissioner has a question • after a meeting, did they have to wait two months for the next Commission meeting to discuss it? Stephanie suggested that the best thing to do is to contact her with the question and she will contact the whole Commission and coordinate the questions and responses to the entire group. D. Chair Gore stated that the Commission missed great opportunities last year due to lack of quorum. Chair Gore inquired where they can increase the number of meetings. Vice-Chair Rodriguez agreed that only meeting only every other month is insufficient. Stephanie replied that a Special Meeting may be called by the Chair if there is an urgent agenda item to be discussed and action taken. VII.
