HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 1999-19686 RESOLUTION NO. 19686 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA APPROVING THE INTERNATIONAL FRIENDSHIP COM1VIISSION REQUEST TO DISCONTINUE ATTEMPTS TO RE1NVIGORATE THE SISTER CITY RELATIONSHIP WITH IRAPUATO, MEXICO AND DIRECTING THE COMMISSION TO PURSUE THE NECESSARY ACTIONS TO OFFICIALLY DISSOLVE THE SISTER CITY AFFILIATION WITH IRAPUATO, MEXICO WHEREAS, the Sister City relationship with Irapuato, Mexico was begun in 1971 and during the 1970's and 1980's, a series of visits and contacts were made between the two cities; and WHEREAS, in earlier years, the two cities had more in common than they do today as Irapuato remains a predominantly agricultural community and Chula Vista has grown into a more modern suburban city; and WHEREAS, over the past several years, the contact and visits between the two cities has been limited and recent attempts to revitalize the Sister City relationship has failed; and WHEREAS, it is the policy of the International Friendship Commission (I~C) to confirm the existence of a "grassroots" commitment in order to sustain a Sister City relationship; and WHEREAS, a solid "grassroots" movement within Chula Vista no longer exists; and VC-dEREAS, the Chair of the IFC made contact with Lewis Harwood, the Sister Cities International Program Director for Mexico, who stated ira good faith effort was attempted yet failed to reinvigorate interest in the program, it was the recommendation of Sister Cities International to "divorce" the sister city relationship; and WHEREAS, staff recommends that Council direct the IFC to inform Irapuato's Mayor of the City's intent to dissolve the sister city relationship; and WHEREAS, the IFC recommends that official steps be taken to dissolve the sister city relationship. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED the City Council of the City of Chula Vista does hereby approve the International Friendship Commission request to discontinue attempts to reinvigorate the Sister City relationship with Irapuato, Mexico. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Commission is directed to pursue the necessary actions to officially dissolve the Sister City affiliation with Irapuato, Mexico.
