STOKES; VICE-CHAIR .I. BALNIS; TRUSTEES E. MELLOR, A. RIGGS & 8. YOUNG NONE LIBRARY DIRECTOR BETTY WAZN/S NONE Chair Stokes called the meeting to order at 4:07 p.m. I. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion made by Trustee Mellor and seconded by Vice-Chair Balnis to approve the meeting minutes from November 16, 2011. Motion carried. Trustees Riggs & Young abstained. II. CONTINUED MATTERS A. Advocacy Vice-Chair Balnis informed Trustees Riggs and Young of the Board's focus on being "Visible, Vocal & Active" B. Board Effectiveness Workshop Chair Stokes provided Trustees Riggs & Young copies of documents from the July 16, 2011 workshop. This item is kept on the agenda for the Board to continue working on next steps. Vice-Chair Balnis provided information on the next CALTAC training seminar to be held in Burbank, CA on Saturday, March 10, 2012 from 8:45 am to 12:45 pm. MINUTES BOARD OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES MINUTES • BOARD OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES III. NEW BUSINESS A. Trustee Angela Riggs presented self-introduction to the Board. B. Trustee Brian Young presented self-introduction to the Board. IV. LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT A. State Funding Update Library Director Waznis informed the Board that the State funding for library services was eliminated for this year. Director Waznis attended a State Library Directors session on Tuesday, January 17, 2012. The group is hopeful that State funds will be reinstated next year. B. Otay Ranch Storefront Library Update The Otay Ranch Center has offered the Library space to open a new branch at the mall. The Friends of the Chula Vista Public Library has donated $45,000 for books and materials. The Chula Vista Public Library Foundation has donated $50,000 for furnishings and equipment. • Trustee Riggs stated that she was very impressed and excited about the new library branch. Trustee Young inquired whether Barnes and Noble was supportive of the opening of the new library branch. Director Waznis stated that Barnes and Noble has been very positive about the new branch. The soft opening is targeted for March 15, 2012 with a Grand Opening event on April 14, 2012. Trustee Mellor suggested getting the word out to schools in the area. Flyers must be approved by the School District. Trustee Mellor also suggested contacting schools to distribute the information via the schools' electronic bulletins and PTA groups. C. Partnerships/Programs Update 1) Coalition of like-minded agencies, under the direction of the Mayor's Office is forming in Chula Vista to be one of ten cities to apply for the Campaign for Grade Level Reading/All-American Cities Award. The group will focus on preschool readiness, stopping truancy and stopping summer reading loss. 2) Rolling Readers is working with CVPL to provide Sunday story times starting in February. • 2 MINUTES • BOARD OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES 3) Naval Family Center is looking for family-friendly space to provide classes. The sessions encourage service members to learn about money management, family communication, etc. The classes will also be open to the public. 4) South County Career Center would like to reach out to the community by providing a kiosk at the library for one-stop help with job seeking. Programs will be offered on resume writing skills, interviewing skills, professional development, etc. 5) SDG&E Grant is providing funds for the Civic and South branches to create "energy lounge" to educate citizens on energy conservation. The San Juan Capistrano Public Library is going to model their program after our ideas. 6) E-Book classes for Nooks and Kindles will be offered again in February. 7) Story Time programs continue the library's strong pre-literacy mission. Programs are offered on Wednesdays at the South Chula Vista Branch and Thursdays at the Civic Center Branch. The Library will also start PJ story times on Monday nights. V. COMMUNICATIONS • A. Friends of the Library -Chair Stokes reported the Friends are looking for an editor for their quarterly newsletter. The Friends will be applying for a County Reinvestment Act Grant on behalf of the Library. The Friends would like to renovate the conference room with movable tables, stackable chairs, paint, carpet, new light reflectors and a whiteboard. The Friends will also be applying for the Performing and Visual Arts Grant to provide an art piece for the Otay Ranch Storefront Library. The Friends of the Heritage Museum is coordinating a new exhibit to open in June focusing on Japanese Americans in Chula Vista. B. Chula Vista Public Library Foundation -Vice-Chair Balnis stated that he attended the quarterly meeting of the Foundation on Wednesday, January 11, 2012. The Foundation's annual fundraiser event is scheduled for April 28, 2012 at the new Otay Ranch Branch. C. Public Comments -None D. Written comments -None • 3 MINUTES BOARD OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES E. Board Comments 1) Trustee Young suggested that he would like to see more outreach for our older community members. Mr. Young stated that the South County Career Center project is a very interesting community resource. 2) Trustee Riggs stated that she is very excited with new library branch. Ms. Riggs would like to see tutoring programs for middle and high school students. Trustee Riggs also stated that she agrees with advocacy & being vocal, and will do what she can to support library programs. 3) Trustee Mellor suggested parking the library vehicles at schools and handing out library card applications. Ms. Mellor also suggested recruiting the assistance of the Hi-Tech High School students for projects. Trustee Mellor stated that she will be absent from the February Board meeting. 4) Vice-Chair Balnis suggested to Board members to come up with resolves for ourselves for this year. Mr. Balnis requested each member to give some thought and come to the next meeting with ideas to promote what the Board should • accomplish this year. Trustee Balnis stated that his resolve is to meet with members of the City Council. Chair Stokes agreed to make this an agenda item for the next Board meeting. Trustee Mellor stated that her resolve will be to promote the Otay Ranch Storefront Library. 5) Chair Stokes welcomed and thanked new Trustees Riggs & Young for joining the Board of Library Trustees. Chair Stokes requested staff to research the costs of business cards for Board members. Board members may be interested in purchasing their own cards. ADJOURNMENT Meeting was adjourned by Chair Stokes at 5:20 p.m. Next Regular Meeting scheduled for Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. 4
