HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 2012-201RESOLUTION NO. 2012-201 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA ACCEPTING A GRANT OF $40,000 FROM "BE THE CHANGE" TO FUND AN ELEMENTARY GRADE READING TUTORING PROGRAM AND APPROPRIATING FUNDS TO THE FISCAL YEAR 2012/2013 OTHER GRANTS FUND BUDGET WHEREAS, in September 2012, the Office of the Mayor's Chula Vista Serves, was awarded a $40,000 grant from Be the Change's ServiceNation campaign to implement Third Grade Reads, avolunteer-led tutoring program in partnership with the mayors office, the Chula Vista Elementary School District and Oasis Tutoring, anon-profit agency focused on K-3 literacy; and WHEREAS, Chula Vista is a City of Service, part of a network of more than 130 cities that have committed to promote community service as a means to solve local challenges; and WHEREAS, OASIS Tutoring has volunteer-based tutoring program in literacy and has a long-standing relationship with the Chula Vista Elementary School District; and WHEREAS, the $40,000 grant award will allow the Office of the Mayor to hire apart- time volunteer coordinator to recruit and support 100 new volunteers to tutor children identified by the Chula Vista Elementary School District teachers as having the lowest reading levels through the OASIS program. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED the City Council of the City of Chula Vista does hereby accept Be the Change's ServiceNation campaign's grant in the amount of $40,000 and appropriates said funds to the Other Grant Fund's Fiscal Year 2012/2013 budget as follows: $11,718 to Personnel Services, $6,282 to the Other Expenses category, and $22,000 to the Supplies and Services category. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that City staff is authorized to take all other actions necessary and appropriate to implement the grant-funded program.
