Staff Commentary on Aqenda Item No. CHULA VISTA CITY COUNCIL MEETING OF June 20, 1972 Item Title: Supporting through bus service between Tijuana, Mexico and San Diego, California Initiated by: City Council Attached is a copy of Resolution [ ] Ordinance [ ] Agreement [ ] Plat [ ] Background: At the meeting of June 13, 1972, the City Council heard a presentation by Mr. Eric Rath, Border Cities Conference, regarding a through bus service between Tijuana, Mexico to San Diego. On May 2, 1972, the County Board of Supervisors expressed its support of the concept of this service, with a request to the United States Interstate Commerce Commission to grant a permit to Tres Estrellas de Oro y' Companias Associadas, S.A. de C. V. for this service. The motion by Council was that a resolution be brought back to the next meeting indicating the Council's support of the concept of the bus service to be provided by a bus company from either side of the border. City Manager Recommendation: A- 113 (Send one copy .to: Adminizt2a.tion; City CZe&k; City A-t.tonney; D rvHlBlt TUESDAY, MAY 2, 1972 / No. 55 ' OIM6TION of Supervisor Boney, seconded by Supervisor Craven, the following resolution is adopted: WHEREAS, a Mexican bus company has indicated an interest in establish- ing a direct, through bus service between Tijuana, Mexico and San Diego, California; and WHEREAS, such through bus service exists in every other major Mexican - United States border area; and WHEREAS, the San Ysidro- Tijuana crossing is the world's busiest border crossing with over 24 million people crossing both ways; and WHEREAS, establishment of such through bus service would greatly assist in the alleviation of the congestion at the San Ysidro- Tijuana crossiiig and would expedite transportation of visitors between Mexico and the United States, promoting more fully the friendly relations between the two nations; NOW THEREFORE IT IS RESOLVED AND ORDERED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Diego does hereby express its support of the concept of through bus service between Tijuana, Mexico to San Diego, California; requests the United States Interstate Commerce Commission to grant a permit to Tres Estrellas de Oro y' Companias Associadas, S.A. de C.V. for this much - needed bus service, but does urge Interstate Commerce Commission officials to confer with the governments of the local cities most affected for route and bus stop suggestions; and directs that this expression of support for through bus service be communicated to the concerned parties.
