CITY OF CHULA VISTA CITY COUNCIL MEETING OF: October 12, 1971 STAFF COMMENTARY ON AGF,NDA ITEM NO. 3a ITEM TITLE: Resolution - Accepting bids and awarding contract for 1911 Act construction - Arizona Street, east of Broadway INITIATOR: Director of Public Works /City Engineer ACTION REQUESTED: Acceptance of bids and awarding contract Copy of Resolution 0 Ordinance ❑ Agreement ❑ PZat ❑ attached BACKGROUND: The City Council has previously authorized the Director of Public Works to advertise for bids for the improvement of Arizona Street, east of Broadway, under the Improvement Act of 1911. On October 1, 1971, four bids were received for this work. Griffith Company is the low bidder at $25,887.80, which is only 0.7% over the Engineer's estimate of $25,711.00. The bids have been reviewed by Lloyd G. Jefferies, Engineer of Work, and he recommends awarding the contract to Griffith Company. On October 1, 1971, four-bids were received for this work. Pacific Engineers was the low bidder at $12,522.00, which is only 0.70 over the Engineer's esti- mate $12,434.00. The bids have been reviewed by Lloyd G. Jefferies, Engineer of Work, and he recommends awarding the contract to Pacific Engineers. Cole, Director of Public Works TO: City Attorney SUBJECT: Accepting Bids and Awarding Contract for the Improvement of Arizona Street, East of Broadway - 1911 Act Assessment District #70 -2 Your office is requested to prepare the necessary [ Resolution; [ ] Ordinance; [ ] Agreement; to be presented to the City Council for action on October 12 , 19 71, on the subject matter. Supporting information: (Use other side if necessary) On October 1, 1971, at 11 :00 A.M. in the Council Chambers, the Director of Public Works publicly opened sealed bids for the con - struction.of improvements in Arizona Street, east of Broadway, in the 1911 Act Assessment District No. 70 -2. Four bids were received as follows: 1. Griffith Company $25,887.80 2. R. E. Hazard Contracting Co. 26,477.80 3. B. E. Wilson Contracting Corp. 27,525.69 4. T. B. Penick and Sons 28,688.60 The bids were checked for signatures and bidders bonds to accompany each proposal and were found to be properly executed and the bonds sufficient. The proposals were mathematically checked and determined to be correct. The bids have been reviewed by Lloyd G. Jefferies, Engineer of Work, and he recommends awarding the contract to the low bidder. A copy of his letter is attached. The low bidder was Griffith Company with a bid of $25,887.80. This bid is 0.7% above the engineer's estimate of $25,711.00. It is recommended that the City Council, by resolution, accept the bids and award the contract to Griffith Company in the amount of $25,887.80 The resolution shall further instruct the City Clerk to record a notice of the award of contract in the office of the San Diego County Recorder as specified in Section 5248 of Chapter 9 of the Improvement Act of 1911.
