Mr. Joseph Rindone, Jr., Superintendent of the Sweetwater Union
High School District, in his letter dated August 24, 1971, requests
authorization to construct an alley -type driveway in excess of the
limitations imposed by Section 27.408 of Ordinance 1205 at Bonita
Vista High School.
This proposed alley -type driveway will have an 80 -foot curb opening.
This wide opening at the curb is required to provide adequate room
for safe school bus turning movements exiting the driveway. The
heavy volume of traffic on Otay Lakes Road and the high speed of
traffic increase this need. The width at the throat of the drive-
way is 30 feet.
The ordinance allows 40% of the property frontage for curb openings
with no one driveway exceeding 25 feet for curb openings. The
school property has approximately 1715 feet of frontage on Otay
Lakes Road which will allow a total of 428.5 feet for curb openings.
There is an existing alley -type driveway with a curb opening of
110 feet which is now used both as an entrance and exit at the
south end of the school premises. This new alley -type driveway is
to be located approximately 520 feet north of the existing driveway.
The new driveway will be connected to the existing driveway by a
30 -foot wide drive which will parallel Otay Lakes Road approximately
110 feet apart.
The Division of Engineering recommends approval of the 80 -foot
width curb opening. Please prepare a resolution for Council action
approving an 80 -foot curb opening on Otay Lakes Road with a pro-
vision that this alley -type driveway will serve only as an EXIT
from the school site for the Sweetwater Union High School District,
and authorizing the Division of Engineering to issue a permit for
its construction. A transparency will be available for Council
viewing.
