Company at 660 "L" Street, have made application for authorization to constru two alley-type driveway approaches on "L" Street in excess of the width limitations imposed by Section 27.408 of Ordinance 1205. The proposed driveways will have a 30 foot width throat with alley-type returns, necessitating a 46 foot curb opening. Maximum curb opening width is 35 feet per ordinance. Use of the excess width alley-type approaches is justified in view of anticipated traffic density along "L" Street and the relatively large number of cars and trucks which will frequently utilize thes driveways. The applicant has paid the required fee for special permit appli- cation. Authorization to construct the two excess width driveways must be made via resolution by the City Council. The Safety Commission has recommended posting of an"Hntrance Only" sign at one driveway and the posting of "No Left Turn" signs at all other driveways. The staff view is that these are reasonable but not necessary recommendations. In discussion with the City Attorney it was brought out that the imposition of these requirements with the request for excess• driveway widths would be an unusual procedure which might not be within the scope of the City's authority. It is the staff's recommendation that the excess driveway widths be approved and that if problems develop from the installation of large. driveways, then remedial measures should be taken. Commission-Board Recommendation: The Safety Commission, at their May 24 meeting, recommended that the new driveway across from Colorado Avenue be an "Entranc Only" and be so posted, and that all other driveways exiting ont "L" Street be posted "No Left Turn." Department F?e ad Recommendation Recommends approval of excess driveway widths. City manager Recommendation: Concur. City o~ C~nu.Qa ~Uista CALIFORNIA The Honorable Mayor and City Council City of Chula Vista, California Gentlemen: At its meeting of May 24, 1972, the Safety Commission considered the request of Ratner's California Clothing for two excess-width driveways on "L" Street. The Commission made the following stipulations before recommending approval of this request: 1. That the new driveway across from Colorado Avenue be an "Entrance Only" and be so posted, and, 2. That all other driveways exiting on to "L" Street be posted "No Left Turn". The Commission feels that if the above stipulations are not followed the request should be denied by the City Council.
