RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA
ENDORSING BOND ISSUE FOR SWEETWATER UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT
The City Council of the City of Chula Vista does hereby
resolve as follows:
WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees of the Sweetwater Union High
School District has authorized a bond issue of $6,000,000 and a maximum
state aid loan of $3,500,000, to be submitted to the voters at the
special school election on October 17, 1967, and
WHEREAS, the last bond election for the Sweetwater Union High
School District was held on December 15, 1959, and
WHEREAS, the Sweetwater Union High School District kept faith
with voters by not only providing all classrooms and facilities promised,
but in addition had enough funds left from the previous bond money to
provide for another junior high school and to purchase three additional
sites in appropriate locations for future schools, and
WHEREAS, the student enrollment will have increased from
10,967 in 1959 to approximately 18,558 in 1970, based on pupils currently
enrolled in the elementary grades, and will continue to increase further
with population growth and there will be a need to provide additional
school housing, and
WHEREAS, the successful passage of these bond issues will en-
able the Sweetwater Union High School District to continue to participate
in the state aid program and thereby to maintain the present building
maximum tax rate of 45¢ per $100 assessed valuation, and
WHEREAS, said bond issues are deemed essential in providing the
construction of the additional school classrooms necessary to house ad-
equately the increasing number of children who are, and will be attending
the schools of the Sweetwater Union High School District, thus avoiding
half day sessions, and
WHEREAS, it is the duty of the Board of Trustees to see that
educational facilities keep pace with the Sweetwater District area's
phenomenal growth making necessary this school building program, and
WHEREAS, a two-thirds majority vote on October 17, 1967, is
required to authorize this bond issue and state loan, making it impera-
tive that all qualified voters be informed of the urgent needs of our
school children so that they will go to the polls on election day and
vote in favor of the school bond issue and the state aid loan, and
WHEREAS, in order to continue to provide adequate classroom
instruction and an adequate educational program, it is necessary to
continue the existing maximum tax rate of $1.45 per $100 assessed valua-
tion for operational expenses,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City
of Chula Vista, that said Council does hereby endorse the school program
of the Sweetwater Union High School District, and hereby urges its mem-
bers to publicize as far as possible the urgency of this program to
assure a majority vote in excess of the required two-thirds vote in
favor of the $6,000,000 bond issue, a maximum state aid loan of $3,500,000,
and a majority vote in favor of the existing maximum tax rate.
