HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 1972-6419'N RESOLUTION N0. 6419 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA OPPOSING AB 452 PERTAINING TO RETIREMENT AND PENSIONS OF POLICEMEN AND FIREMEN The City Council of the City of Chula Vista does hereby resolve as follows: WHEREAS, AB 452 would mandate increased retirement benefits for all policemen and firemen employed by contracting members of the Public Employees Retirement System of the State of California allowing retirement at age 50 and and lowering the mandatory re- tirement age from 65 to 60, and WHEREAS, the ten million dollars appropriated to assist in amortizing the costs of prior service credit falls far short of the amounts that will be required to be paid by the municipalities to compensate for deficiencies which will be created, and WHEREAS, such actions by the State Legislature constitute direct interference in the negotiation process for wages, working conditions and benefits required pursuant to the Meyers-Milias Brown Act, and WHEREAS, the State Legislature would behave in a totally irresponsible manner imposing the burden upon local municipalities for which they are unwilling to provide necessary financial assis- tance, and WHEREAS, it is deemed to be completely unfair for employee groups to persuade those legislators not responsive to the will of the local taxpayers to affect increases in their benefits when they should be initiated at the local level pursuant to programs previously established. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Chula Vista does hereby go on record as strongly opposing AB 452 and urges that all members of the San Diego County Legislative Delegation reject this bill which will severely strain the property tax revenue sources. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk of the City of Chula Vista be, and she is hereby authorized and directed to forward certified copies of this resolution to Senator James Mills, Assembly- man Wadie Deddeh, and all members of the San Diego County Legislative Delegation.
