RESOLUTION OF THE CLTY COUrdCIL OF THE CITY OF CHULA
VISTA SUPPORTIrIG CONSTRUCTION OF ROUTE 252 PROJECT
IN SOUTHEAST SAN DIEGO
The City Council of the. City of Chula Vista does hereby
resolve as follows:
WHER,F,AS, the City of Chula Vista is gravely concerned
over any delay or proposed deletion of Route 252 Project in Southeast
San Diego, and
WHEREAS, it is evident that the impact of the construction
of Route 252 has already occurred through the clearing of the right
of way and relocation of the residents and the area in the vicinity
of said alignment has already been severed by the South Chollas Creek
with the limited number of channel crossings preserved in the design of
the freeway, and
WHEREAS, formal objection to the project made nearly a
year ago fails to consider a number of factors not the least of which
is the substantially higher volume of traffic that will be imposed
upon Interstate 5 and Route 54 which will necessitate further wide-
ning of Interstate 5 and result in lower speeds and reduced levels
of service to South Bay residents in general, and
WHEREAS, Route 252, if constructed, would provide a more
direct access from South Bay to the downtown San Diego area in that
the I-805/252 route is approximately one mile shorter than the
54/I-5 route and the approximately 30,000 vehicles per day traveling
the "extra" mile along the 54/I-5 route will result in a direct cost
to vehicle operators of over $1,000,000 annually (calculated on the
basis of 10 cents per mile), and
V7HEREAS, elimination of the extra mile of travel through
construction of Route 252 would result in a saving of approximately
730,000 gallons of gasoline per year (based upon 15 m.p.g. average).
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of
the City of Chula Vista does hereby urge the construction of Route
252, which will result in a reduction of vehicle miles traveled by
many Chula Vista residents with resultant savings in energy and
direct costs to many members of our community.
