Due to price increases in this equipment, alternate bids were also requested on
factory reconditioned equipment. The specifications were written to provide equip-
ment that would produce high quality copies at the lowest overall cost. The system
consists of a fully automated offset duplicator interfaced with an electrostatic
copier/master maker.
The specifications for the copier/master maker require a dry electrostatic process.
This process provides a background free master, eliminates the possibility of
master jams at the duplicator and is most economical. A.B. Dick Models are wet
process and do not meet this specification.
Manual operation of the duplicator is important to the operator. The A-M Models
meet this specification. The A.B. Dick Model 1600 is supposed to operate manually,
but when demonstrated, the operator could not get it to operate.
The Print shop is presently using an A-M offset press which will be compatible with
the A-M total copy system only. Supplies and masters presently stored will be
accepted by an A-M system. Standardization of equipment and supplies is important.
With receipt of prices above budget estimate, which is $23,160.D0, it was decided
to investigate the possibility of purchasing factory reconditioned equipment.
The equipment offered was inspected. The Addressograph-Multigraph equipment meets
all the specifications and was physically inspected. The A.B. Dick Model is not
a continuous system and does not meet specifications. A list of City, County and
School District Agencies which have purchased A-M reconditioned equipment was furn-
isYied by A-M. A survey of these agencies found no complaints on the equipment.
Considering the above factors, it is recommended that the factory reconditioned
continuous total copy system be purchased from Addressograph-Multigraph Corporation.
Funds required for the purchase, including sales tax, are $16,907.00.
